A
Quick Guide to Boat Engine Care...
Fuel,
A useful tip for your petrol fuelled engines;
if your inboard/outboard motor is being laid up
short term always drain the fuel system. Modern
fuels have a “shelf life” this is
not so apparent in motorcars as usually the fuel
is consumed and replaced on a regular basis.
Cooling
systems,
It is always good practice to flush your engine
with fresh water regularly, many modern engines
have flush points or flushing muffs are the best
option.
Corrosion
guard,
Regular coating of your engine with a corrosion
guard will help protect against damp and seawater
Anodes,
Keep an eye on your anodes, when buying a new
boat make sure you have your boat anodes inspected
every quarter when Marina berthed, keep an eye
on the speed of deterioration, this will vary
slightly so keep a record (remember if they are
disappearing they are working this is good) You
will soon have an idea when you need to have your
anodes checked/changed.
Stern
drives,
Always remember it is important to Anti foul your
stern drive as well as your hull, you should use
specific products suited to stern drives they
are also available in colours to match original
schemes. In the early summer months performance
can be ruined by “weedy leg”
Hopefully
these tips will help you through the season, in
addition to regular servicing and comprehensive
winterizing your boat engine whether inboard or
outboard petrol or diesel should give you hours
of pleasure.
